An alpine meadow with pine forest and snow-streaked peaks in Sonamarg, Kashmir

Sonamarg

The meadow of gold, at the foot of the glaciers

Sonamarg — the “meadow of gold” — lies about 80 km north-east of Srinagar at roughly 2,700 m, where the Sindh river runs through a steep valley of pine forest, meadows and glaciers. It is the last major stop in the Kashmir Valley on the road to Zoji La and Ladakh, and the base for the Baltal route of the Amarnath Yatra.

Its star sight is the Thajiwas glacier, reached by pony or on foot from the edge of town. Heavy winter snow used to cut Sonamarg off for months, but the Z-Morh (Sonamarg) tunnel, opened in early 2025, is designed to keep the road from Srinagar open year-round — check current conditions before a winter visit.

Top things to do at Sonamarg

Ride or walk to Thajiwas glacier

The 3–4 km approach from the Thajiwas park climbs gently through meadows to snowfields at the foot of the glacier. Ponies and, in snowy months, sledges are available; agree rates at the official stand.

Follow the Sindh river

The drive up the Sindh valley from Srinagar is beautiful in itself, with riverside stops at Kangan and Gund. In Sonamarg the river is popular for short rafting runs in summer when operators are open.

Head for Zoji La

When the pass is open (usually late spring to autumn), a drive towards Zoji La (about 3,530 m) gives huge mountain views; permits or registration rules can apply, and road conditions change daily.

Trek the Great Lakes

Sonamarg is the start of the Kashmir Great Lakes trek, a week-long route past alpine lakes that runs roughly July to September with organised operators.

Insider tips

  • Start early from Srinagar — traffic on the Sindh valley road builds by mid-morning in summer.
  • Even in July it can be cold near the glacier; wear waterproof shoes and layers.
  • Do not walk onto the glacier or snow bridges without a local guide — they can collapse.
  • During the Amarnath Yatra, traffic controls can slow the road near Baltal.
