The Lidder river winding through pine-forested mountains of the Pahalgam valley

Pahalgam

Pine forests and the rushing Lidder river

Around 90–95 km east of Srinagar, Pahalgam (“valley of shepherds”) sits at roughly 2,200 m where the East and West Lidder rivers meet, amid pine forest and meadows. It grew from a shepherds’ village into one of Kashmir’s favourite resorts, loved for its riverside walks, cool summers and the drive through the saffron fields and apple orchards of south Kashmir.

Pahalgam is also the traditional base for the Amarnath Yatra, the Hindu pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave, which usually runs for several weeks in July and August via Chandanwari. The town is busiest then and in May–June; spring and autumn are calmer.

Top things to do at Pahalgam

Walk along the Lidder

Follow the river through the pines, picnic on the banks or watch trout fishers (fishing needs a permit). The riverside parks in town are lovely in the late afternoon.

Visit Betaab Valley, Aru and Chandanwari

The valleys above town are reached by Pahalgam’s local union taxis, which run fixed-rate trips. See Betaab & Aru Valleys for details.

Stop at Pampore, Awantipora and Martand on the way

The drive from Srinagar passes the saffron fields of Pampore (flowering in late October–November), the 9th-century Awantipora temple ruins and, with a short detour, the dramatic Martand Sun Temple ruins near Anantnag.

Pony rides and walks

Ponies take visitors up to meadows and viewpoints above town. Rates are fixed by the local authorities and are usually posted at the pony stands — agree the destination and price before you set off.

  • Book well ahead for the Amarnath Yatra period and the May–June holidays.
  • Access to some meadows and trails can change at short notice for security reasons; check the current situation locally.

Pahalgam FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How far is Pahalgam from Srinagar?

About 90–95 km, or 2.5–3 hours by road.

Is Pahalgam better than Gulmarg?

They are different. Pahalgam is about rivers, pine valleys and walks; Gulmarg is a high open meadow with the gondola and, in winter, skiing. With time, visit both — ideally with a night in each.

When is the Amarnath Yatra?

Usually for several weeks in July and August. Dates are announced each year by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, and registration is mandatory for pilgrims.
