Where to Stay in the Kashmir Valley

A night on a houseboat, a palace above Dal Lake, a lodge in the Gulmarg snow and pine-forest hotels in Pahalgam.

Most visitors base themselves in Srinagar and make day trips to the mountains — it has the widest choice of hotels, the best food and, of course, the houseboats. Spending one or two nights in Gulmarg or Pahalgam changes the trip, though: you get the meadows early in the morning, before the day-trippers, and the quiet of the mountains at night.

A good pattern for a week: two or three nights in Srinagar (at least one on a houseboat), one or two in Pahalgam, and one in Gulmarg — or Gulmarg as a day trip in summer. Below are well-known options in each base, all bookable on Trip.com.

Booking tips

  • Book early for peak dates: April (Tulip Garden), May–June, the Amarnath Yatra period and Christmas–New Year sell out and prices rise sharply.
  • Check heating in winter: from November to March confirm the room has proper heating, hot water and extra blankets.
  • Houseboat details: confirm whether meals and shikara transfers are included, which ghat you arrive at, and whether the boat is registered with the tourism department.
  • Mobile data: if your prepaid SIM will not work, choose a property with reliable Wi-Fi.
  • Flexible rates: weather and road closures can change plans — refundable bookings are worth the small premium.

Prefer to have everything arranged? Combine your stay with a guided day trip or a houseboat package, and let a local guide handle the mountain logistics.

Where to stay: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to stay in Srinagar?

Near the Boulevard and Dal Lake for views and easy shikara access; on the Zabarwan hillside for luxury and panoramas; in Rajbagh or near the Jhelum for a central city base; on a houseboat for the unique experience.

Is it safe to stay on a houseboat?

Registered houseboats are a long-established, popular way to stay. Choose a boat graded by the tourism department with recent reviews, and agree what is included before arrival.

Should I stay in Gulmarg or do a day trip?

In summer a day trip works well. In winter, or if you want to ski or catch the gondola before the queues, stay at least one night.

How far in advance should I book?

For April, May–June, the Amarnath Yatra and the winter holidays, book several weeks to months ahead. At other times a week or two is usually enough.
