Golden autumn chinar trees reflected in a canal in Srinagar

Best Time to Visit Kashmir

Tulips in April, meadows in July, golden chinars in November and powder snow in January — here is what each month really feels like.

Kashmir has four distinct seasons, and each one transforms the valley. Spring (March–May) brings almond blossom and the Tulip Garden; summer (June–August) is warm in Srinagar and perfect in the mountains; autumn (September–November) is crisp and golden; winter (December–February) is cold and snowy, with skiing in Gulmarg.

There is no bad season — only different trips. The most popular periods are April to June and the winter holidays; the most beautiful, many locals will tell you, is autumn.

Spring (March to May): blossom and tulips

The valley wakes up in March, when the almond trees flower at Badamwari in the old city. From about the last week of March to late April, the Tulip Garden is in bloom, and in May the Mughal gardens are at their fullest. Days are mild and nights cool; showers are common. Snow still lingers high in Gulmarg and Sonamarg, which is a big draw for visitors from the plains. April and May are among the busiest months — book ahead.

Summer (June to August): meadows and mountains

This is the season for the mountains. Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg are green and flower-filled, high passes such as Zoji La are open, and treks like the Kashmir Great Lakes run from about July to September. Srinagar can be warm at midday, with lotus flowers on Dal Lake in July and August. The Amarnath Yatra (usually July–August) brings huge numbers of pilgrims and tighter security to Pahalgam and Sonamarg/Baltal — plan road travel and accommodation around it.

Crowd tip: school holidays in May–June bring the biggest domestic crowds. Late September to early November, and March, offer beautiful weather and far fewer people.

Autumn (September to November): gold and saffron

Many consider this the loveliest season. The air is dry and clear, the peaks sharp against blue skies, and from late October the chinar trees turn copper, red and gold across Srinagar’s gardens. Apples are harvested in the orchards of south Kashmir, and the saffron crocuses of Pampore flower for a few weeks from late October into November. Nights get cold — pack warm layers.

Winter (December to February): snow and skiing

Winter is cold, with the harshest 40 days, Chillai Kalan, running from 21 December to 31 January. Srinagar may see snowfall and freezing nights, and Kashmiris keep warm with the pheran cloak and kangri fire pot. Gulmarg becomes a ski resort from about December to March, with the best snow usually in January and February. Some roads and high areas close, flights can be delayed by fog or snow, and the Jammu–Srinagar highway is sometimes blocked — keep your plans flexible.

Festivals and busy dates

  • Tulip Festival (April) — Srinagar hotels fill quickly.
  • Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha (dates follow the lunar calendar) — festive, with some businesses closed.
  • Amarnath Yatra (usually July–August) — heavy traffic and security on the Pahalgam and Baltal routes.
  • Kheer Bhawani Mela at Tulmulla (late May or June) — an important Kashmiri Pandit festival.
  • Christmas–New Year — peak season in Gulmarg; book months ahead.
