Rows of red and yellow tulips in bloom at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, Srinagar

Tulip Garden

Asia’s largest tulip garden, for a few weeks in spring

The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, opened in 2008 on the terraced slopes of the Zabarwan range between Chashme Shahi and the Boulevard, is billed as the largest tulip garden in Asia. Each spring well over a million bulbs — often quoted at around 1.5 million or more, in dozens of varieties — flower in long bands of red, yellow, pink, purple and white, with Dal Lake and the snowy Pir Panjal beyond.

The catch is timing: the garden opens only for the flowering season, typically from about the last week of March to late April, and the exact dates depend on the weather. A tulip festival with cultural events and craft stalls is usually held at the same time, and Srinagar’s hotels fill up fast.

Top things to do at Tulip Garden

See the tulips at peak bloom

Peak colour usually lasts one to two weeks within the season. Early morning light is softest and the paths are emptier; late afternoon brings the crowds. Check local news or the J&K tourism department for the official opening date before you fix your trip.

Combine with the Mughal gardens

The Tulip Garden sits right next to Chashme Shahi and the Botanical Garden, and a few minutes from Nishat and Shalimar — all of which are also full of spring flowers at this time.

Catch the almond blossom first

If you come in March, look for the almond trees flowering at Badamwari garden below Hari Parbat in the old city — the traditional first sign of spring in Srinagar.

How to get to Tulip Garden

  • From Dalgate: about 8–9 km along the Boulevard, 20–30 minutes by taxi or auto-rickshaw.
  • On a tour: spring departures of the Srinagar city and gardens tours usually build in a Tulip Garden stop.
  • Entry: an entry ticket is sold at the gate; check the current fee, and whether online tickets are available that year.

Insider tips

  • Book your Srinagar hotel or houseboat well in advance for early to mid April — it is one of the busiest weeks of the year.
  • Weekends and holidays are packed; go on a weekday morning.
  • Spring weather is changeable: bring a light jacket and an umbrella.
  • Stay on the paths — trampling the beds is fined and ruins the display for others.
