Dense fir forest and grassy meadows below snow-streaked hills at Doodhpathri

Doodhpathri

The valley of milk

Doodhpathri, the “valley of milk”, lies in Budgam district about 40–45 km south-west of Srinagar at around 2,700 m. Its name is said to come from the foaming white water of the Shaliganga stream that tumbles across the meadows. The landscape is gently rolling grassland framed by pine and fir, with snow peaks of the Pir Panjal behind.

Compared with Gulmarg and Pahalgam, facilities are basic — a few huts, tea stalls and pony operators — which is exactly its charm. It is a meadow for picnics, walks and pony rides rather than for sightseeing checklists.
